CNMF Selected as Returning Recipient of the National Park Foundation Open OutDoors for Kids Grant

Cabrillo National Monument Foundation is thrilled to announce that we have been selected as a 2024-2025 recipient of the National Park Foundation Open Outdoors for Kids grant!  Open OutDoors for Kids allows CNMF the opportunity to connect and inspire the next generation at our very own National Park. As a returning recipient of this grant, we are excited to continue providing over 5,000 San Diego County students the opportunity to visit and learn about Cabrillo National Monument by providing bus funding for Title 1 and fourth-grade classrooms.

OBRAG: New Trail Opens at Cabrillo National Monument

After years of planning and one year of construction, a new hiking trail has opened at Cabrillo National Monument. Named “the Oceanside Trail”, it is an approximately 0.7 mile (one way) dirt and gravel pathway that leads from the whale watching overlook near the Old Lighthouse down a series of switchbacks and stairs to the start of the Coastal Trail near the Monument’s tidepools.

SD News: New Oceanside Trail opens at Cabrillo National Monument

Major improvements at Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma include a recently opened half-mile Oceanside Trail linking the Whale Watch and Kelp Forest Overlook above with the Coastal Walk and tide pools below.

The new trail in San Diego County’s only national monument is part of the National Park Service’s 25-year trail management plan. That document provides direction and guidance on a variety of issues and topics like resource preservation, visitor use, development, and boundary management.

Fox 5 KUSI News: New hiking trail opens in Point Loma

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Attention San Diego’s hikers and outdoor walkers: there’s a brand new trail for you to try.

The Cabrillo National Monument on Wednesday unveiled a new seaside path that connects two popular areas of the park, the Whale Watch and Kelp Forest Overlook and the tidepools.

The trailhead for the new half-mile route begins at the top of the overlook trail then continues south of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse before connecting to the coastal trail and parking lot adjacent to the tidepool area.

With the autumn equinox comes a shift in the Park. Many of the plants are still in their summer dormancy, but the days begin to cool, the school year begins, and the tourist season wanes, the lines slow but Cabrillo National Monument continues to be a flurry of activity as Park stewards prepare for planting, maintenance projects and we at the foundation prepare for our Fall Campaign and the year ahead.
