Who We Are
The Cabrillo National Monument Foundation (CNMF) is a private nonprofit organization with an IRS 501(c)(3) status which provides support for special projects at Cabrillo National Monument.
Since 1956 the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation has helped the National Park Service with numerous educational and scientific activities at Cabrillo National Monument. The Foundation has published several award winning books on historic and scientific topics relating to the Monument. Revenue for these projects comes through donations, memberships and sales of publications and other educational items. CNMF is one of several National Park Service Cooperating Associations in the U.S.A; these organizations work to enhance the visitor’s experience at the National Parks. For more information about NPS Cooperating Associations, please visit the Association of Partners for Public Lands, or the NPS Cooperating Association.
The mission of CNMF is to support and fund interpretive, cultural, historical, scientific and educational programs and activities at Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego’s only National Park. The Foundation relies solely on revenues generated by the bookstore in the Visitor Center at the park, visitor convenience services, and the membership program to fund such things as the park visitor user guide The Cabrillo Journal, printing of the park brochure, subscriptions and books for the park library, living history programs and scientific research.
Special events like the Whale Watch and Intertidal Life Festival in January, Parks and Open Spaces in June, NPS Founder’s Day in August and the anniversary of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in November are funded by the Foundation, as well as the education program that supports development, printing and distribution of materials used in conjunction with local schools and busing for students from economically-disadvantaged schools to visit the park.
Volunteers at the park contribute a significant amount of work that supplements the NPS staff and would not otherwise be done without our support. CNMF funds training, uniforms and recognition of these volunteers. Even with the support we offer, with severely limited federal appropriations and greater demands being placed on Park resources than ever before, many projects and programs are left unfunded.
Cabrillo National Monument Foundation is the premier supporter of the educational, interpretive, and scientific programs of Cabrillo National Monument, meeting the needs of the National Park Service.
